From Renting to Owning: Abbie’s Story
For Abbie, getting onto the property ladder had long felt like a distant dream. Previously renting a two-bedroom apartment through a housing association, she found herself caught in the all-too-familiar cycle of saving for a deposit, only to see the goalposts shift with rising mortgage rates and an ever-increasing cost of living.
“I was saving for a deposit for quite a while,” Abbie shares, “but it just felt like I was never going to reach that. It felt like an endless cycle of saving.”
Despite the challenges, Abbie remained determined. She had always kept an eye on Plumlife Homes and their new developments, and when Francis Place in Walkden came onto her radar, the location and opportunity were too good to pass up.
Discovering Shared Ownership
Abbie first learned about Shared Ownership through internet research and her connection with Great Places, Plumlife’s parent company.
“I think because I was renting with Great Places, who are linked to Plumlife, it was through communication with them that I initially got more information,” she explains.
The Shared Ownership model quickly stood out as a practical and positive solution.
“The main reason I chose Shared Ownership was the financial aspect of it. It opened up a lot more options for me. The deposit was lower, the mortgage was lower, and the rent for the remaining share was also lower. It allowed me to afford the type of home I actually wanted to live in.”
Now settled into her new home, Abbie couldn’t be happier with her decision.
“I’ve never lived in a new build property before, so it was just really nice to be in a home that didn’t need any work doing to it. The properties have been built to a very high spec—a really high standard—so it just feels really fresh and clean and a nice reset.”
A Supportive and Straightforward Buying Experience
Buying a home for the first time can be overwhelming, but Abbie describes her experience with Plumlife as “really positive.”
“As a first-time buyer, I was anxious and didn’t really know where to begin. But Plumlife guide you through it in a way that you feel really well informed.”
She highlights the support she received from her Sales Advisor, Ian Burns: “He was just brilliant the whole way through. He was really attentive, and no question was left unanswered. It was a really straightforward, quite an easy process. I was really pleasantly surprised.”
Looking Ahead: Advice to Future Buyers
Abbie has nothing but good things to say about Shared Ownership, particularly through Plumlife.
“100%. I would definitely recommend it, especially with Plumlife who are always developing new properties. No matter what position you’re in, there will be something available to you. It was just a very supportive, individualised process.”
Abbie’s journey from renting to home ownership highlights the powerful impact that Shared Ownership can have.
